Summary

The campaign will provide dry food to the 100 most vulnerable IDP households in Malable during the Ramadan period.

Challenge

Somalia is the most severely drought-affected country in the Horn of Africa, experiencing the cumulative effects of three consecutive below-average rainy seasons, severe water shortages, rising food prices, desert locusts, and the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the UNOCHA monthly press release in February 2022, more than 2.8 million people in 66 of the country’s 74 districts have been affected, with nearly 133,000 displaced in search of food, water, and pasture.

There are approximately 750 households residing in the Malable IDP camp, displaced by the current droughts in Kurtunwarey, Qoryley, and Awdhegle districts in the Lower Shabelle region. These IDP communities are in urgent need of an immediate, life-saving response.

Recurrent conflict and drought have compelled these internally displaced persons (IDPs) to leave their hometown and seek humanitarian assistance at the Malable IDP camp. They are vulnerable and destitute families with immediate needs, especially for food. The holy month of Ramadan is of particular significance as they are Muslims fasting during this time.

Solution

The SOVA organization aims to raise funds for a timely response, intending to provide food assistance to 100 households during the holy month of Ramadan. Each household will receive a varied assortment of food commodities, sufficient for the entire month. The initial plan is to allocate 600 individuals, and an additional 100 families will be included if the fundraising goal is met.

To address the immediate needs of the communities in the Malable IDP, the organization plans to distribute unconditional in-kind assorted commodities. Each household will be entitled to receive a food basket containing 25kg of rice, 25kg of sugar, 25kg of wheat flour, a carton of spaghetti, and 5 liters of vegetable oil. All 100 targeted households will receive the same food basket, allowing them to joyfully observe Ramadan alongside their Muslim brethren.
