Let’s Build Peace Together

Ongoing campaign

Campaign Status

Ongoing Offline: The campaign is currently ongoing offline and, thus still in the process of collecting funds.

Summary

The campaign aims to promote peace, social cohesion, and economic stability in the 8 rural border communes of Macenta by constructing a shed in the Panziazou market and implementing conflict prevention measures alongside support for income-generating activities.

Challenge

Despite ongoing integration efforts, significant progress is still needed to ensure the security and peace of cross-border communities and the populations of Mano River Union member countries, particularly in the Macenta prefecture. The rural border communities of Macenta face numerous threats to peace and security, both internal and external.

These threats include violence related to drug use, widespread human rights violations, conflicts between farmers and herders, intra-family disputes over inheritance and marriage, land disputes, poverty, environmental degradation, and organized cross-border crime.

Solution

The construction of a shed in the Panziazou market will create a conducive environment for trading local products, such as agricultural and livestock goods, among communities. This initiative will generate local jobs, increase the income of young people and women, and promote peace and social cohesion. Additionally, the project will implement activities to prevent and manage inter-community conflicts, promote community reconciliation, strengthen community bonds, and support peaceful transhumance management. By promoting resilient pastoral practices and supporting income-generating activities (IGAs) for youth and women, the project will help consolidate peace, social cohesion, and community life in the eight rural border communes of Macenta.

This project will be approached through the following steps:

  • Construction of a Hangar for the Panziazou Agricultural Market: The hangar will serve as a central hub for selling local agricultural produce, providing farmers with a secure and organized space for commercial transactions. This will stimulate the local economy and promote better resource distribution.
  • Awareness-Raising Initiatives: JASD will organize campaigns to educate communities on the importance of peace and social cohesion, as well as the rights and responsibilities related to land ownership and inheritance.
  • Training: Training sessions will be offered to community members, particularly young people and women, to help them acquire practical skills in agriculture, business management, and conflict mediation. The training aims to empower participants and enhance their ability to manage disputes peacefully.

  • Mediation: JASD will establish mediation mechanisms to assist farmers and herders in resolving their disputes constructively. These mediations will also address issues related to inheritance and land disputes, helping to ease local tensions.
  • Promotion of Income-Generating Activities (IGAs): The NGO will encourage young people and women to engage in IGAs by providing financial support and targeted training. This initiative aims to diversify the community's sources of income and reduce the risk of conflicts over resource access.
