Summary

The campaign aims to establish a center focused on preventing and supporting survivors of gender-based violence

Challenge

Thousands of women in Burkina Faso are victims of violence, experiencing various forms of sexual abuse in public spaces, educational and professional settings, as well as within their homes. Economically, women still face exclusion from accessing means of production and, in some cases, have their family property, including land, housing, furniture, and vehicles, unjustly taken away. On a cultural level, practices like female genital mutilation, forced and early marriages, and social exclusion based on accusations of witchcraft inflict harm and degradation upon women in this nation of honorable people.

In addition to these challenges, women also endure moral, psychological, and physical violence.

A study conducted in 2018 by the Directorate General of Sectoral Studies and Statistics in the 13 regions reveals the following findings: the number of individuals (including minors and women) who have experienced physical harm or threats to their lives is 5,100, representing a 63% increase between 2015 and 2018. During the same year, the region with the highest cumulative offenses per 100,000 inhabitants was the Center region. According to the same study, there were 1,700 cases of moral and psychological violence recorded, marking a 54% increase between 2015 and 2018. In 2018, 800 cases of sexual violence were reported among minors and women. These instances in our society contribute to criminal acts, including terrorism. If no action is taken, we risk the erosion of our human society.

Solution

Our project aims to establish a center focused on preventing and supporting survivors of gender-based violence by promoting their socio-economic empowerment.

This will involve capacity building in areas like female entrepreneurship, female leadership, gender-based violence, nutrition, IT, and more. We will also offer literacy and vocational training in various professions, provide necessary work materials, grant microcredits, offer legal and psychological assistance, and provide essential primary healthcare services.
