Summary
The crowdfunding campaign aims to enhance climate knowledge among 60 young people (30 males and 30 females) and involve them in community awareness and climate-related initiatives, while also providing climate education to 1200 individuals (600 young men and 600 young women).
Challenge
Climate change factors and direct human interventions in the environment, such as waste burning, are having detrimental effects on Yemen's environment. The country is witnessing a steady increase in temperatures and a depletion of water resources, both of which are impacting ecosystems and wildlife. Yemen's rising temperatures have led to the expansion of desertification in agricultural lands, deterioration of the natural environment, and difficulties for plants and animals to adapt to these conditions. The harsh climate in many Yemeni areas has resulted in a decline in biodiversity and the extinction of various plant and animal species, including coral reefs, which could take millions of years to recover.
Furthermore, Yemen is grappling with a severe water shortage and increased drought. Climate changes have reduced rainfall and heightened water evaporation, affecting rivers, springs, and groundwater. These changes have significantly affected agriculture and communities that depend on freshwater sources. Hurricane waves and increased torrential rains, caused by climate changes, wash away crops and agricultural soil, leading to landfills and water pollution. Additionally, agricultural lands and crops are exposed to drought, resulting in a decline in agricultural production in Yemen. This decline has had adverse effects on food security and the local economy.
Waste disposal is another pressing issue threatening Yemen's environment, and its impact has intensified during the ongoing conflict since 2015. The burning of waste in many Yemeni cities is a contributing factor to climate change. Moreover, it directly impacts Yemen's environment and human health, primarily due to the emission of toxic gases and pollutants during the burning process.
These environmental challenges are becoming increasingly complex and exacerbated by the armed conflict in Yemen. The conflict contributes to the destruction of infrastructure and the natural environment. Bombing and destruction lead to the release of pollutants and toxic waste into the soil and water, further worsening the pollution of natural resources and threatening wildlife in Yemen.
Solution
To address the challenges posed by climate change and human impact on Yemen's environment, we are implementing a series of initiatives and activities aimed at increasing community awareness about the importance of addressing climate change and protecting the environment. Our goal is to encourage society to adapt to climate challenges, reduce their impact, and take effective measures to minimize emissions, pollution, and environmental damage while preserving ecological balance.
Furthermore, our campaign places a strong emphasis on tackling the waste issue in Yemen and its adverse effects on the environment and public health. We are committed to raising awareness about the dangers of waste burning and promoting innovative, eco-friendly alternatives for recycling and safe waste disposal.
Our campaign relies on a network of young men and women who have undergone training with our organization and are currently working under our supervision. They are actively involved in monitoring climate changes and serve as response teams for natural disasters in areas frequently affected by such events in Taiz. We are dedicated to enhancing the skills and capabilities of these young individuals, providing them with the necessary tools and resources to effectively monitor, prepare for, and respond to natural disasters in their local communities.
