Summary

The campaign aims to build a TVET center to empower 100 children and young adults with disabilities annually, providing literacy, vocational, digital, and life skills.

Challenge

In Lagos, persons with disabilities have been discriminated against, and are denied access to their basic rights such as education. They are marginalized and this fosters persons with disabilities becoming beggars within the community. 8 out of 10 children with disabilities do not go beyond the high school/secondary school level in Nigeria.

They beg for alms and become a passive member of society. Children with disabilities are among the most marginalized groups in Africa. 95.5% of children with disabilities are out of school in Nigeria. The statistics are worse when it comes to the empowerment of children with disabilities. They are stereotyped in different societies in Nigeria.

Solution

We want to empower persons with disabilities in Lagos State with access to education, life, digital, and vocational skills to become self-reliant and increase their employability thus reducing the multidimensional poverty index among persons with disabilities in Lagos State. We aim to build a TVET center for persons with disabilities.

The TVET center will cater to the education and skill acquisition of persons with disabilities. These skills include digital skills and technology such as coding, web design, graphics design, robotics, artificial intelligence, and vocational skills such as arts and crafts, hairdressing, tailoring, barbing, stove wicking, and shoe-making skills.

The empowerment and education of children with disabilities in Nigeria are in crisis but with skill empowerment, we will help each child and young person with a disability develop their abilities and turn their disabilities into superpowers. We will make them employable and independent in the future. There are so many abilities in any disability.

100 persons with disabilities will be trained per year. The objective is:

  • To equip persons with disabilities with digital skills
  • To equip persons with disabilities with vocational skills
  • To foster education and life skills of persons with disabilities
  • To increase the rate of employability
  • To increase participation of persons with disability in the society.

This TVET center will enable children and young persons with disabilities to become active members of society and contribute to the GDP of the nation. Also, it will serve as a tourist center where people across the globe will come see abilities turned into superpowers.
