Summary
The project aims to support to collection of rainwater & spring water as well as saffron cultivation and fish farming for sustainable mountain development. This will help 150 families in Tadmamt village in Morocco earn a decent income through farming and agriculture.
Challenge
There is a growing demand for the organic products produced in the rural area of Tadmamt village in the Atlas Mountains. These organic products are fruits, vegetables, and meat. However, the farmers are struggling with necessities such as a lack of harvesting material and adequate storage space.
Solution
ISSHAM إسهام or Contribution in Arabic is a cooperative that focuses on animal husbandry as well as organic farming in the rural area of Tadmamt village in the Atlas Mountains.
The project is led by 9 people from the village who have come together to fight poverty in their community.
So far, the cooperative has dug a well and has begun construction of a barn for raising goats and poultry.
After completion of the construction, Issham plans during the first quarter of 2022 to:
- Equip the well and install a watering system for the plantation;
- Acquire the necessary raw material for breeding (goats and fodder...)
- Prepare a room in conformity with the standards of hygiene and food safety dedicated to the valorization of different products (dairy products, eggs, and poultry meat).
The second step will be the planting of fruit trees (apple and walnut) and medicinal plants on the unused agricultural land at the end of the same quarter.
This project cannot succeed without the acquisition of adequate equipment and the introduction of the farm.
Long-Term Impact
The ISSHAM cooperative will create jobs in the fields of breeding and planting, bringing new perspectives for uneducated women and men in the village. As such, the project will contribute to the development of this region on the social level by fighting against poverty and on the environmental level by training the inhabitants in the fields of water management and sustainable agriculture.
