The Female Rehabilitation and Development Organization (FRDO) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the lives of women, girls, and marginalized communities throughout Afghanistan. Since its inception, FRDO has focused on empowering women and promoting gender equality by providing access to education, vocational training, healthcare, legal awareness, and sustainable livelihood opportunities. Our programs are carefully designed to address the pressing needs of the vulnerable and to foster an environment where women can participate equally in all aspects of society.

With over two decades of service, FRDO has gained recognition for its grassroots efforts, focusing on community-driven development and holistic support for women. We believe that sustainable development can only be achieved when women and men have equal opportunities to contribute to and benefit from economic, social, and political progress.

FRDO’s mission is to create a society where women and girls are empowered to lead dignified lives, free from violence, discrimination, and poverty. Through supporting initiatives that enhance gender equity, democracy, human rights, and sustainable development, FRDO is committed to building a future where all individuals, regardless of gender, can thrive.

FRDO was formally established in January 1995 as a legally registered organization under the Ministry of Economy of Afghanistan, with registration number 56. The organization was founded in response to the critical needs of women, particularly in the northern provinces of Afghanistan, where gender inequality and limited access to essential services have historically marginalized women and girls.

Since its founding, FRDO has worked closely with multiple Afghan ministries, including the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. The organization is also affiliated with several international and national networks such as ACBAR and the Afghan Women’s Network (AWN)

Through its years of operation, FRDO has implemented over 86 projects that have directly impacted thousands of women and communities across Afghanistan. These projects have focused on improving livelihoods, promoting health and education, and advocating for gender equality.

FRDO operates across various provinces in Afghanistan, with a primary focus on the northern and central regions. Our headquarters is based in Kabul, with a regional office in Mazar-e-Sharif, allowing us to maintain a strong presence in Balkh, Kandahar, Nangarhar, and surrounding provinces. Additionally, FRDO has implemented projects in provinces such as Kabul, Bamyan, Nuristan, Wardak, Paktia, Kunduz, and Jawzjan etc.…

Our geographical coverage focuses on areas where women face the most significant socio-economic challenges, including rural and conflict-affected regions. FRDO strives to reach marginalized communities, particularly those impacted by poverty, displacement, and gender-based violence. Through our wide-reaching network of local staff and partner organizations, FRDO ensures that its programs are accessible to women and girls in both urban and remote areas.

As of 2024, FRDO is expanding its operations to additional provinces to further extend its support to vulnerable populations and continue addressing the diverse needs of Afghan women across the country.
