Challenge
How would you feel if you had to carry out various activities without electricity and faced difficulties in obtaining clean water? It can be truly frustrating!
This is the daily reality for 240 people in the remote areas of Holiang, Maros, South Sulawesi. For the past two years, Pak Agus, his family, and other villagers have been living without electricity. The only source of electricity is a ten-year-old hydroelectric power station.
Unfortunately, the power plant has stopped functioning due to equipment failure and landslides at several irrigation points. Its isolated location behind the Camba mountains in Maros Regency, South Sulawesi, makes it challenging for the state electricity company (PLN) to access and restore electricity to the area.
Holiang residents have engaged in consultations with the Wanua Panrita team to address issues related to electricity and water.
Throughout this year, the residents of Holiang have made efforts to independently repair the power plant, but the funds raised have proven inadequate. Compounding the challenge, no one in Holiang possesses the necessary electrical expertise to effectively repair the power plant. Presently, the sole source of illumination for Holiang residents during the night comes from kerosene-fueled lamps. These lamps are utilized for various activities such as cooking, eating, and providing light for school children studying at night.
Indeed, the use of kerosene lamps generates pollutant gases, including carbon black, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. These gases pose risks to both the environment and health. Families like Pak Agus' and all residents of Holiang, who have been relying on kerosene lamps for several years, face an elevated risk of cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure. Additionally, they are more susceptible to respiratory illnesses such as flu or asthma, with children facing an even higher risk.
In addition to the challenges posed by the lack of electricity, Holiang residents also face difficulties in accessing water. During the dry season, the availability of clean water is severely limited. Residents of Holiang must walk for at least an hour to reach the sole water source in the area.
The scarcity of water not only disrupts basic necessities such as bathing, washing, and sanitation but also has a significant impact on agriculture, which serves as the primary source of income for the community. It is not uncommon for family heads like Pak Agus to migrate to other cities because they are unable to engage in farming due to inadequate water supplies.
Solution
The 240 residents of Holiang are in need of your assistance to restore electricity and water to their homes. With access to electricity, reliance on lamps—known for their negative health impacts—can be eliminated. This improvement will enhance the daily activities and economic pursuits of Holiang residents.
Furthermore, a consistent supply of clean water to residents' homes will address fundamental needs such as bathing, toilet use, and cooking. The assured water supply will also contribute to agricultural activities, allowing for additional planting seasons and increased production. This, in turn, will alleviate the necessity for individuals like Mr. Agus and other family heads to seek employment outside Holiang to sustain their livelihoods.
The funds generated from this campaign will be allocated towards the following purposes:
- Turbine repair for the hydroelectric power station
- Restoration of water irrigation canals connected to power plants
- Renovation of cable lines leading to people's homes
- Operational and maintenance costs for the power plant
- Construction of water pipes to supply residences
- Establishment of water storage systems in homes and agricultural land.
