Summary
The campaign aims to provide reusable, washable sanitary pads for 200 girls in 5 communities of Kano Nigeria.
Challenge
Huraira is a 15-year-old girl from a rural community in Kano, Nigeria. She dreams of becoming a fashion designer and is currently learning to sew clothes in a shop in a neighboring community. However, she faces many challenges due to her menstrual cycle.
Every month, Huraira deals with the pain, discomfort, and stigma of menstruation. She has to walk for hours to reach the nearest health center, where she can get a sanitary pad or a reusable, washable cloth. However, these products are expensive and often run out before her period ends. The health center caters to five communities and frequently lacks the necessary medical supplies to meet the demand.
There is a scarcity of reusable washable sanitary pads in the health centers, forcing Huraira to continue using cloth that only lasts for one year. When the cloth gets torn, she sometimes resorts to using newspapers.
Huraira feels ashamed and isolated because of her period. The school she attends lacks sufficient toilet facilities for girls on their period, causing her to miss school and fashion classes. She is reluctant to confide in anyone about her struggles due to fear of criticism and being labeled a "cry baby."
Millions of girls like Huraira face similar challenges every month due to their periods. They lack access to adequate menstrual hygiene products, facilities, education, and information, resulting in health problems such as infections, anemia, depression, and anxiety.
Solution
That is why we need your help to change this situation for Huraira and other girls like her. We invite you to join our campaign for menstrual health. Our campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of menstrual health and hygiene for girls' education, empowerment, and well-being.
We want to provide girls with affordable and sustainable menstrual hygiene products that are safe, comfortable, and hygienic. Additionally, we aim to improve the availability and quality of menstrual hygiene facilities in schools, communities, and health centers. Furthermore, we seek to educate girls about their bodies, menstrual cycles, rights, and choices regarding their periods.
We believe that by providing girls with access to menstrual health services and products, we can help them achieve their full potential in life. By breaking the silence around periods, we aim to challenge the myths and taboos that prevent girls from freely expressing themselves.
We believe that by celebrating menstruation as a natural part of being human, we can create a more inclusive and respectful society for all.
