The campaign aims to provide farmers with productive and resilient seeds in the face of climate change and various plant diseases in the Bambao region.

Challenge

The absence of readily available seeds can present a significant obstacle for many small-scale peasant farmers. In such situations, these farmers face the daunting challenge of reducing their production capacity. This is not merely an inconvenience but a fundamental disruption in their livelihoods. Agriculture, for many of these individuals and their communities, represents the primary source of sustenance and income.

When farmers are unable to access the seeds they need, they are compelled to curtail their agricultural activities. This could mean planting fewer crops or even leaving fields fallow, ultimately resulting in diminished yields. The consequences of reduced production reverberate far beyond the individual farms; they affect the entire community's food security and economic stability.

The unavailability of seeds is not solely a concern for individual farmers; it is a multifaceted issue with cascading effects. It threatens the food security of communities, forces individuals into less stable economic activities, and increases dependence on food imports, which can have far-reaching implications for both the livelihoods of small-scale farmers and the broader economic stability of a region or country. Addressing this challenge is pivotal for promoting sustainable agriculture, local food production, and self-reliance in agricultural practices.

Solution

This project aims to provide productive and resistant seeds to peasant farmers, ensuring food security and contributing to rural development. It also has the goal of conserving the environment, as seed multiplication will support reforestation efforts. The multiplication and distribution of seeds from various plant species will enable farmers to carry out their agricultural activities without shortages.

The initial target group for this project will be farmers in the Bambao Grande Comores region, where they will receive seeds and participate in training sessions to improve their knowledge of basic production techniques. This will enable them to meet the needs of the population concerning food security and environmental protection.

The establishment of a seed multiplication and production site remains a crucial support point for the agricultural sector as a whole. Producing and distributing seeds will encourage our cooperative, CJDABIO, to promote Agro-Environmental and Climate Measures and increase the number of producers.

One of our primary objectives, besides environmental protection and conservation, is to provide as many seeds as possible to farmers through this project. This will reduce the importation of certain food items and ensure food security in the Comoros.
