Summary

The campaign aims to set up an innovative sanitary pad factory in Jos, Nigeria, that will produce locally made, low-cost, hygienic sanitary pads and aims to create awareness among 500 adolescent girls on the importance of using sanitary pads for better hygiene and confidence.

Challenge

In Nigeria, millions of young women and girls cannot afford sanitary napkins because they are manufactured using expensive machinery and are priced at a premium. Consequently, these women and girls resort to using cheaper, unhygienic alternatives that can cause infections, skin irritation, stains in public, and also affect girls’ attendance and performance in school.

Solution

The "Help Give Girls Dignity and Livelihood" crowdfunding campaign, launched by Girls Education Mission International, aims to address the pressing issue of lack of proper menstrual hygiene among young girls in Nigeria, particularly in Jos, by raising $50,000 USD. The campaign aims to set up an innovative sanitary pad factory that will produce locally made, low-cost, hygienic sanitary pads.

Through proper training, education, and employment opportunities, the project aims to empower young women and girls while facilitating better menstrual health and hygiene practices. Together with schools and communities, GEM intends to facilitate better menstrual hygiene for underprivileged girls by empowering them through proper training, education, and employment opportunities.

The campaign also aims to create awareness among 500 adolescent girls on the importance of using sanitary pads instead of rags, clothes, or dried leaves, so they can feel confident, stay in school, and improve their hygiene.

The main objectives of this Project include 1. increased access to quality education for girls in primary and post-primary schools 2. Improved Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) among girls. 3. Effective mentorship support towards the personal and professional development of girls 4. Influencing policies and advocating with Government stakeholders to take the education of girls with seriousness and ensuring the sustainability of girl child education and empowerment initiatives in Nigeria and beyond.
