ABOUT INTERCOMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT SOCIAL ORGANISATION (IDS):
Intercommunity Development Social Organization (IDS) formally Integrated Development Services (IDS) is a national, non-profit, and non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in 2004, incorporated with the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC/IT/No.60576) 2013 IDS is granted with special consultative status with the United Nations ECOSOC in 2013. IDS' mandate is to save marginalized women, youth, children and other minority groups through peacebuilding, food security and livelihoods, education, nutrition, WASH and promotion of climate change resilience, disaster management, protection and gender equity in Africa. IDS has its head office in Abuja (FCT), and state offices are in Borno and Benue.
IDS AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:
1. To strengthen vulnerable groups’ resilience for food security and livelihoods through general food distribution, and
empowerment in Agriculture and other income-generating activities (IGAs) in Africa.
2. To promote gender and disability inclusion, and protection of vulnerable women, youth, children and other minority
groups through advocacy, awareness creation, and empowerment in Africa.
3. To enhance marginalized children’s rights to education in emergency (EiE) through back-to-school campaigns,
construction of schools, provision of educational materials to learners and training of teachers in Africa.
4. To provide prompt and appropriate assistance, and effective recovery to victims of disaster in Africa.
5. To build resilience and mitigate the impact of climate change through advocacy, education and empowerment in Africa.
6. To improve the health condition of vulnerable groups through WASH in Africa.
7. To promote peaceful co-existence by preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE), capacity building, advocacy,
and sensitization in Africa.
IDS’S CAPACITY (INCLUDING RESOURCES AND STAFF) TO CARRY OUT THE PROJECT:
Intercommunity Development Social Organizations (IDS) have strong capacities in project designing, implementation, MEAL, and sustainability working partnerships with local, national, and international development partners including the United Nations (UN) agencies. IDS management team comprises distinguished and practising experts, acknowledged authorities, seasonal, tested and vastly experienced professionals and technocrats in diverse fields of human, project, and organizational resources development, with in-depth knowledge, skills and experience in Humanitarian emergency programming using different approaches and methodologies.
IDS have a well-equipped operations office with modern facilities strategically located in a secure environment beside Kelrish Hotel, By Umar Alad Filling Station First Turn Left, Alauma Rd, off Junaina Rd, (Pompomari By-Pass) Maiduguri, Borno State Coordinate: 11.8210926,13.1131695,1 with project operational vehicle (2 Hilux Vans), highly skilled and experienced staff with relevant academic qualifications that coordinate the organizational activities at the field level (32 full-time staff (15 Male and 17 Female) and 55 part-time and volunteer staff) (27 Male and 28 Female) At the field level IDS have an existing partnership with States Ministry of Agriculture/ FADAMA III, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Ministry of Health, State Primary Health Care Agencies (SPHCA) and LGA Authorities. IDS utilizes its facilities such as Guest Houses, Store/Storage facilities and extension workers to fast-track organizational operations. IDS also have a standard office, information, and communication technology equipment including (2) site light phones, 10 laptop computers, 10 tablets, 3 photocopier machines, 3 printers, GSM telephone sets and security gadgets including 10 workie talkies radios. 4 vehicle search mirrors, 2 search metal detector Garrett and other operational equipment.
As a member of the Food Security Sector (FSS), Education in Emergency (EIE) working group, Early Recovery and Livelihood (ER&L), Protection Sector, Child Protection Sub-Sector, Gender Violence Sub-Sector (GBVSS) and other clusters/humanitarian coordination mechanisms at the national and northeast regional level with active participation and submission of the monthly 5W Matrix, IDS is strategically positioned to utilize the skills, resources, and opportunities at the cluster level for effective project implementation and sustainability.
IDS maintains financial records with supporting documentation using an accounting system (Quick Book Software) that is in accordance with Nigerian and internationally acceptable accounting principles. Pertinent programs recorded are maintained and available for examination by independent auditors, donor partners and other authorized agencies and stakeholders open request on a yearly basis. The annual audit report includes independent auditors who have verified IDS’s ability to comply with both International and Federal Government regulations and maintain internal controls. IDS also maintain a very high standard of procurement and logistics procedures in line with the organizational procurement and logistic policy.
1. FOOD SECURITY AND LIVELIHOODS INTERVENTION:
A). AGRICULTURE-BASED INTERVENTION: IDS has trained and empowered over 30,000 smallholder farmers and their associations adapting digital climate-smart agriculture (D-CSA) by promoting access to agricultural inputs (improved seeds/live stocks, tractors, fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, water pumps, and sprayers); Agricultural extension services, and empowerment on Family Business Scheme (FBS) with intervention including village saving and leading association (VSLA), provision of market access and financial linkage services to boost Agricultural productivity and profitability targeting food insecure population affected by climate change and humanitarian emergency in northeast Nigeria. IDS interventions address the issue of food insecurity/malnutrition, creation employment opportunities, boost income generations (IGAs) and poverty alleviation across Abuja(FCT), Benue, Nasarawa and Borno States with funding and technical support from NERI/Creative Associate International-USAID Office of the Transition Initiative (OTI) 2016 - (USD$105,110.55), Victims Support Fund (VSF) (NGN750,000,000) and World Food Programme (WFP) Over One Million USD$ from 2017 to 2023.
General Food Distribution (GFD) and Nutrition Activities: IDS also works in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) and Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) to provide Unconditional Food and Nutrition Assistance intervention targeted at 46,000 IDPs, Host communities, Returnees, and the local population with an estimated of value of over One Billion Nigeria Naira in Borno and Benue State in 2021 and 2023.
B). IDS LIVELIHOODS INTERVENTION: IDS is committed to the training and empowerment of vulnerable women, youth and other minority groups including persons with disabilities and have over the past 13 years, trained and empowered households affected by the humanitarian emergency on various vocational skills activities that are marketable at the community level with focus on:
a) Training on Tailoring,
b) Knitting,
c) Detergent and Cosmetics,
d) Craft Production,
e) Hair Dressing,
f) Small Scale Agricultural production (Animal and, Fish farming and crop production)
g) Carpentry
h) Cap Production
i) Village Saving and Loan Association (VSLA) revolving credit scheme (RCS)
j) Bakery Production
k) Family Business Scheme (FBS) including Entrepreneurship development, Financial Literacy training, small business management/record keeping, business plan development, financial linkage services and market access.
Over 20,000 Households have so far benefited from IDS Livelihoods intervention across Nasarawa State, Abuja (FCT), Benue and Borno State where IDS have a physical presence. The initiative has received funds and technical support from US Ambassador to Nigeria SSH Project 2010 (USD$7,938), the African Women Development Fund (AWDF) (USD$20,000) and Street Child of Nigeria/ UNICEF, Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF) and the British High Commission to Nigeria 2017 to date, value over (NGN250,000,000:00).
2. CLIMATE ACTION ACTIVITIES: Intercommunity Development Social Organisation (IDS) over the years engaged in investments in renewable energy, advocates for policies, programmes and training that align with the Paris Agreement to limit temperature rises, and proposes local solutions to reduce emissions-based on successful initiatives worldwide. Collaboration at various levels is essential to raise ambition and achieve significant progress against climate change. IDS is also committed to promoting digital climate-smart agriculture (D-CSA) through training and empowerment of smallholders and the provision of improved crops and lives to boost productivity, enhance resilience, and reduce GHG. 3. DISASTER RISK REDUCTION (DRR): IDS has over the years engaged in disaster preparedness and response in Nigeria, in 2022 participated actively in Makurdi, Benue State Flood Response with key interventions focusing on the Provision of Emergency Food Supplies: Distribute essential food items, including non-perishable goods, to affected families, Clothing and Hygiene Kits: Supply clothing, blankets, Mats and hygiene products to vulnerable groups, particularly women and children., Food Assistant (Cash and voucher Assistance) and Nutrition Support: Offer vulnerable groups particularly referral when Mobile Clinics and partner with mobile health teams to provide immediate medical care and vaccinations. On livelihoods IDS was able to train vulnerable affected populations on climate-smart agriculture (crops and animal production), Distribution of agricultural inputs (improve seeds, livestock and tools) to support farmers in rebuilding their livelihoods, Training and financial support for small businesses to restart economic activities. And Establishment of community savings and landing groups to enhance financial resilience. Community Engagement and Mobilization (Ongoing) Awareness Campaigns: Educate communities about disaster preparedness and response and Conduct community training on disaster preparedness and flood mitigation. 4. EDUCATION IN EMERGENCY(EIE): IDS works to promote orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC), IDPs, returnees and host community children's rights to education and have established 17 Temporary Learning Spaces (TLS) in Biu, Hawul, and Damboa LGA of Borno State and distributed educational materials free to over 20,000 learners in Abuja (FCT) and Borno State. IDS also constructed/renovated and furnished 7 public schools destroyed by insurgency and trained 500 public school teachers to provide quality education and mental health and psycho-social support services (MHPSS) to traumatized children with funding from Street Child/UNICEF and European Union Borno Package amounting to over 200 million Naira from 2017 to 2022.
5. CHILD PROTECTION: IDS intervention encompasses case management ranging from child abuse, harmful child labour, a child exposed to domestic violence, neglect, a child with special needs (chronic health), mental health needs, vulnerable caregivers, child’s parents who were killed because of the insurgency and other concerns. Other activities under protection include Family Tracing and Reunification (FTR) for un-accompanying children, Mental Health, and Psycho-social Support Services (MHPSS), and provision of Community Care (CBC) to safeguard children in humanitarian emergencies and livelihood support to parents, guardians, and caregivers to promote vulnerable children wellbeing. IDS have implemented activities under child protection with an estimated cost of over 50 million Naira activities supported by Street Child/UNICEF and Nigerian Humanitarian Fund (NHF) from 2017 to 2022.
6. SEXUAL AND GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE (GBV) IDS is committed to addressing the issue of violence against women/girls (VAW/G) in Nigeria through awareness creation, community advocacy, and capacity strengthening of the demand and supply actors to increase pressure on the justice sector institutions to ensure proper documentation of VAW/G cases, facilitates timely arrest and prosecution of gender-based violence perpetrators in the society. IDS has also established violence against women/girls’ telephone helpline (09040222253) where free advice and guidance are provided to survivors of SGBV to seek justice and livelihood opportunities. IDS have a Do No Harm, PSEA, Community Engagement Policy, Conflict Sensitivity, dignity and Integrity policy that guides the Organisation's operation on protection. The initiative has received funds and technical support from Justice for All (J4A) UK – Department for International Development (DFID) 2015 (NGN9,625,000) and Street Child / UK High Commission to Nigeria 20 thousand Great British Pound (GBP.
7. CONFLICTS RESOLUTION AND PEACE-BUILDING: IDS activities involve prevention and countering of violent extremism (P/CVE): Awareness creation, Advocacy programs, capacity building and empowerment of women, youth leaders and other minority groups including persons with disabilities and their organizations to promote peaceful coexistence, mediate and provide psycho-social support services in the upsurge of conflicts in their communities with funding from Urgent Action Fund – Africa (USD$5,000) 2014 and Global Center on Cooperative Society USA/ Carefronting Nigeria (USD$ 12,000) 2020 to build peace through (P/CVE) in Mafa, Bama, Kaga Konduga, Nganzai, Askira/Uba, Biu and Jere LGAs of Borno State, The intervention was also funded by Too Young to Wed (TYTW) 2019/2020 (USD$ 6,200:00) to train and empower women/girls adopted and regain freedom from the insurgency in Borno State.
8. WASH INTERVENTION: IDS is committed to the implantation of WASH activities and have constructed 15 Latrines across the Organization and established temporary learning spaces (TLS) in Biu, Damboa and Hawul LGA areas of Borno State. IDS is also engaged in community advocacy, sensitization and awareness creation on menstrual hygiene management (MHM) and has established a Skills Acquisition Centre (SAC) where women and youth especially girls are trained on the art of reusable sanitary pads (RSPs), face-marks and other crafts with an estimated cost over NGN50,000,000 in Abuja (FCT), Nasarawa, Benue and Borno State.
