Summary

The campaign aims to provide winterization kits to 3,000 families affected by the floods. The kits will include all the necessary items like warm clothes, blankets, and many more. 

Challenge

The 2022 floods in Pakistan have had a devastating impact on many areas of the country and its people. The news of these floods, broadcasted on television and social media, left the entire nation heartbroken.

Direct Focus Community Aid visited the flood-affected districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and witnessed the once beautiful places submerged in water and ruins. Roads and bridges lay in complete disarray, and thousands of homes, public health facilities, water systems, and schools have either been destroyed or severely damaged.

As the floodwaters receded, the situation turned into a critical child survival crisis. Fragile, hungry children are now battling severe acute malnutrition, diarrhea, malaria, dengue fever, typhoid, acute respiratory infections, and painful skin conditions. The longer this crisis persists, the greater the risk of children suffering from mental health issues. Initially, accessing the affected villages was challenging, but we managed to reach several of them, where we met countless families who had lost everything. Hundreds of homes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are surrounded and destroyed by floodwaters, leaving the residents in dire need of any assistance they can get. They lack food, drinking water, and shelter facilities, and with winter approaching, they require warm clothes, jackets, woolen caps, and scarves.

Most wintertime illnesses tend to impact children, including common colds, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, sore throat, asthma, earaches, and whooping cough, among others. During our visit to the affected area, we encountered children who were dressed in torn or light clothing, as their belongings had been displaced, and they had nothing else to keep themselves warm. One child lamented, 'We fled the flood, leaving our house without packing our stuff. There was no time to gather our clothes... My winter clothes are still in the house, and now I don't have anything for winter.'

Solution

DFCA aims to provide shelter assistance and winterization kits in the affected districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. We will distribute winterization kits to 3,000 families, with a primary focus on children and women. As the winter season approaches, these families who lost their homes and possessions in the September floods are in need of support. The kits will include essential items such as warm clothes, blankets, and more.

The proposed solution is to provide the affected community with winterization kits, which include the following items:
