Blogpost: Crowdfunding giving women an edge in business!

Digital technologies integrally changed entrepreneurial processes and outcomes.

The way crowdfunding is presented today brings together many modern elements and new concepts. Crowdfunding has changed the way entrepreneurs raise money and establish their businesses all across the world by transforming these activities online.

Not only that, but it has also revolutionized the gender dynamic of raising funds.

How? Researchers have found that women are more successful than men at crowdfunding. Reports show that, while men have benefited from a gender bias against women when seeking financing for business start-ups, the opposite may be true for female entrepreneurs seeking initial investment through crowdfunding efforts. Women are able to start their business from the ground through crowdfunding and are more successful at reaching their campaign targets than their male counterparts. They outperformed men at 22 percent, versus men’s 17 percent success rate.

Why? A number of factors backed this success.

  • First, and most importantly, is the soft skills women have to engage the crowd. It is the way women presented their projects, in a more emotional, and inclusive language. They often perform strongly in terms of soft skills, such as communication, organization, listening and socializing – qualities that can be particularly useful when trying to connect with a diverse crowd. Women also tend to be more compassionate and emotional in their videos and pitch descriptions while men focus more on technical and rational features. This communication style is way better at engaging the crowd from both genders.
  • Second, the ability to listen to the crowd feedback. So, when it comes to feedback from the crowd and investors, women might just be better at truly listening to what the crowd is saying, taking into account what they are doing both right and wrong, and adapting their campaign accordingly to make it even more successful.
  • Third, women tend to have more developed ideas. Reports and statistics indicate that female entrepreneurs run fewer campaigns, but achieve a higher success rate than men. This shows that they spend more time developing their ideas and plan well their business, setting a higher confidence edge before launching their campaign.
  • Last but not least, women approach campaigns more holistically. Yes, women want to raise money through crowdfunding, but they also seek community-building, raising awareness, and the importance of the crowd supporting their business ideas. This makes the mass think those female entrepreneurs are more trustworthy than male entrepreneurs.

Three top tips to female entrepreneurs planning a crowdfunding campaign!

Crowdfunding can help female founders to start their businesses and to scale them. Campaigns need to be done with a strategic and creative approach. Three top tips to female entrepreneurs to succeed in their crowdfunding campaigns, and grow their overall confidence to see their projects thrive.

  • Include as many as you can to grow your network and don’t eliminate anyone when thinking about who might support your campaign: you have no idea how much people are willing to help and what might interest them in your project.
  • Be honest about your strengths and weaknesses and ensure emotion and passion in all your communications. Communication is a key factor in a successful crowdfunding campaign. Be strategic and creative in your approach. Use the right tools, messages, and platforms to address your audience. Seek media attention to create a buzz and form a public opinion in your campaign favor.
  • And finally, actively search out for collaborations with partners and other businesses. It will help boost your project and increase the size of your audience – and the amount you can raise.

The world needs more women leaders. Hopefully, we see more and more women entering the world of crowdfunding, and more men learning from their success!
