Thematic Focus

Building Community Resilience

The Problem

Facing the impact of climate change, the Tuti community in Sudan is unable to mitigate flood risks through its traditional practices. Unplanned settlements are vulnerable, leaving them prone to floods and torrents. The community needs forecasting services and improved communication channels through the use of smart, yet simple and affordable technologies. There is also a need to diagnose drainage blockages and remedy them.

The Solution

The Sudan Urban Development Think Tank aims to develop, implement, and disseminate interventions that will enable better responses to climate change in the future. The project particularly focuses on enhancing climate change resilience of the built environment on the Tuti island. Interventions are co-produced with the community to provide a communication system that disseminates localized early warning forecasts.

Impact

The project aims at improving the preparedness of residents in areas that are highly vulnerable to floods, while ensuring the inclusive and sustainable involvement of all stakeholders. The project seeks to use technology to improve responses and help build more resilient action plans in the context of climate change.
