Thematic Focus

Building Community Resilience

The Problem

War, armed conflict, hunger, forced migration and post-migration assimilation into the host population has a considerable impact on the mental and social wellbeing of the refugee population in Turkey. Particularly, Syrians, after years of severe human rights violations, experience emotional disorders (depression, prolonged grief disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and several forms of anxiety disorders) as the most prevalent and most significant clinical problem (UNHCR). Despite this data, there are multiple barriers to accessing mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services linked to finance, stigma, language, legal status, social beliefs, fear of sharing information and lack of MHPSS workers, specialized in the Syrian crisis.

The Solution

The Hope Revival Organization aims to offer people from the Arabic-speaking world (Syrian refugees hosted in Turkey), who suffer from trauma-related disorders, access to MHPSS services online while offering work opportunities to MHPSS workers qualified in the Syrian context. The counselling is conducted entirely through a data secure mobile application. Their web-based therapy aims to ensure wellbeing and resilience by providing access to psychosocial support to help people overcome difficult experiences. Initially, the beneficiaries of the proposed project will be vulnerable Syrian refugees living in Turkey, however, in subsequent years, the platform aims to expand its target population to provide services to other refugee populations, coming from and residing in different countries.

Impact

The project seeks to play a positive role in community empowerment and capacity building with a community-based approach. It promotes good health and wellbeing of refugees and contributes to the mitigation of inequalities in access to mental healthcare.
