Education in EmergencyThe Problem
During the pandemic, girls in the Sokoto state in Nigeria had to remain at home, without digital skills or access to devices that could help them continue to learn. In post Covid-19, the existing gender equality gap in the field of education got wider and a vast majority of these girls had to drop out of school. The few that graduated from secondary education had to get married, having no digital skills or information on alternative educational and livelihood opportunities.
The Solution
The Association of Northern Women Entrepreneurs seeks to create and develop a women-only sustainable impact hub, which will be a safe space for young people to learn digital, entrepreneurship and life skills in a culturally appropriate environment. The project seeks to aid girls in continuing their education and bridge the gender gap in digital literacy. It aims to promote women and girl's economic empowerment as well as overall wellbeing. The project has supported over 200 girls and aims to reach around 1000 girls and 500 women annually.
Impact
The initiative aims to eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equitable access to skill development in income generation for women. It also promotes inclusive and sustainable technology through the remote learning facilities that it provides.
