Building Community Resilience

The Problem

DOODA Solutions addresses three main problems affecting the Lebanese agriculture sector, namely poor soil quality, unavailability of local high-quality fertilizers and high farming costs. These problems have driven several small, medium, and large-scale farmers out of the sector. Most farmers use lower quality fertilizers because of the high prices of imported chemical fertilizers (prices can reach up to 2000 USD/ton), while other farmers abstain from applying fertilizers entirely, which affects their yield and harvest quality.

The Solution

DOODA Solutions, a women-led initiative, provides a sustainable solution for restoring soil health and improving farming revenues, while managing organic waste. Earthworms eat organic waste odourlessly and at a fast rate, while generating premium grade fertilizer called vermicompost. The most important attributes of DOODA Vermicompost are: 1: an increase in crop yield by more than 50%; 2: a reduction in pest attacks by 75%; 3: a reduction in water consumption for irrigation by 30%; 4: an increase in seed germination by 15%; 5: the improvement of the quality of produce by 30%; and 6: the stabilization of soil pH to optimal levels. Scaling up our production increases affordable raw materials for farmers and opens up job opportunities in farming across Lebanon.

Impact

DOODA Solutions contributes towards the provision of food security through the increase of sustainable agricultural yield. This promotes responsible production and consumption patterns. The project combats air, water and soil pollution by hazardous chemicals in fertilizers. The project also aims to empower women and girls through trainings and workshops to increase their skills in this sector and provide job opportunities.
