Education in EmergencyThe Problem
Mauritania has the lowest higher education completion rates in the world. Out of 45,000 students, only 8% graduate each year. The baccalaureate degree has become a social obstacle for many young Mauritanians who wish to continue their higher education or apply for a job which very often requires at least the baccalaureate level. Covid-19 has made the issue worse. Also, girls are often deprived of evening classes by their families for reasons of security and the unavailability of safe means of transport during the night. Despite the widespread use of smartphones, digital educational content has not been adapted to the national curriculum.
The Solution
Through our app Guarrini, the Association Mauritanian for Development, Research and Monitoring will provide free online access to all classes needed for students. The main target beneficiaries of the project will be schoolgirls in Mauritania as they will be able to attend classes from the safety of their homes. The platform provides Mauritanian teachers with an interactive education platform for the delivery of high-quality courses and assessments. This project aims to significantly increase the yearly success rate, and students will develop the skills they need to have a better life.
Impact
By providing digital access to educational content, Guarrini contributes to the spread of quality education among students in Mauritania. The project also promotes gender equality by supporting schoolgirls in their education.
