Thematic Focus

Building Community Resilience

The Problem

In Pakistan, over 15 million young people, between 15 and 24 years old, are not educated, trained or employed. Further, Covid-19 restrictions have put over 60% of migrant workers at a high risk of unemployment in the Least Developed Communities (LDCs) of Pakistan’s KP province. This situation has contributed to an increase in poverty, and social and environmental issues.

The Solution

Needy Poor People Foundation (NPPF) aims to introduce a project that will generate employment and income for youth through tourism. Beneficiaries of the project will be target groups who belong to the rural, mountainous communities of the KP province in the districts of Battagram, Shangla and Kohistan. 30% of the beneficiaries are expected to be women. NPPF will train participants in hospitality standards using digital technology. NPPF’s novel digital hub aims to connect the community with tourists using social media marketing/telcos, digital payment, feedback and information dissemination systems. Youth capacity building via Zoom is also part of the digital hub. This platform will offer tourists an immersive, safe and reliable experience while generating employment and income for locals.

Impact

Through tourism-related employment and income generation, NPPF seeks to reduce poverty and inequalities, and build gender inclusive resilience among vulnerable groups. It also uses technology to promote sustainable and eco-friendly tourism in the KP province.
