Building Community ResilienceThe Problem
The Bunikasih village in Indonesia is geographically isolated and populated by 200 people, who are socio-economically dependent on the surrounding forest. The forest plays an important role in the larger Cipunagara Watershed system and there is a need to optimize the economic potential of natural resources in the region. However, the lack of access to electricity in Bunikasih hinders economic development in the community. Also, local Arenga palm sugar production has largely been unfriendly to women, hiring mainly men for manual labour.
The Solution
Yayasan Inara focuses on optimizing Arenga Palm Sugar production through its integration with a micro-hydro power plant to improve production and reduce manual workload for food processing. The automation of the production process and integration of hydropower will open up labour opportunities for vulnerable groups, including women. The initiative protects the forest and catchment area, while supporting the livelihood of the local community. Also, as hydro resources are abundant, hydroelectricity is a promising alternative for the electrification of remote villages in this area.
Impact
92% of sources of electricity in the Java Island come from fossil fuels. The implementation of the hydro-power plant in this project aims to reduce dependence on fossil energy and contribute towards the provision of affordable, reliable and sustainable energy. The project seeks to improve the local economy and empower the local community.
