Building Community ResilienceThe Problem
Floods are a common natural disaster that occurs almost every year in Tunisia. In September 2018, the Tunisian peninsula of Cape Bon was suddenly hit by extreme rainfall, causing severe flooding and killing six people. In five hours, the governorate of Nabeul recorded about a third of the rainfall it receives on average annually. The storm caused flash floods of up to 1.70 metres in some areas and caused several valleys (wadis) to overflow destroying agricultural fields, crops and damaging the infrastructure. Early flood detection is required as it is extremely vital to the prevention of the loss of life and valuable assets.
The Solution
ATPNE Tunisia (E-Loued) aims at developing and promoting a smart disaster prediction application using flood risk analytics for sustainable climate action. This IoT-based flood detection system is built to monitor and track different natural factors (humidity, temperature, water level, etc.), which will allow people to take the necessary measures for minimizing damages. The goal is to reduce vulnerability and adapt the city to floods, reduce the risk of flooding during rainfall and protect the population and property.
Impact
The project seeks to equip people with improved natural disaster responses, reduce the risk of extreme event damages and thus, ensure security as well as a good quality of life in rural and urban communities that live in flood prone areas.
