Emergency Medical Response through CSOsThe Problem
Drought-affected, agro-pastoral households in Somalia are being displaced to urban centres and Internally Displaced Person (IDP) sites with limited access to adequate water, sanitation and health services. These IDPs face an elevated risk of mortality. In 2022, a significantly higher number of measles cases were reported in drought-affected districts when compared to previous years (2020, 2021). The spike is partially linked to a decrease in measles vaccination coverage rates in these drought-affected districts. Children, women, people with disabilities, and elderly people are particularly vulnerable to communicable diseases.
The Solution
The Burhakaba Town Section Committee (BTSC) aims to focus on the implementation of health education to enhance the uptake of immunization services, dissemination of lifesaving health messages to the community and health and human services for the prevention of the outbreak of diseases including AWD/Cholera, measles and COVID-19 among drought-affected populations in the selected/priority districts. The project will also enable antenatal care (ANC) visits and delivery by a skilled birth attendant, through one mobile team and four community mobilizers in the Burhakaba district.
Impact
This project seeks to have a significant impact on the health needs of vulnerable communities through the provision of essential primary health care services in health centres and mobile health clinics and outreach.
