Building Community ResilienceThe Problem
Most malnourished children come from families headed by vulnerable women in Somalia. This is due to a lack of financial resilience as well as poor access to basic needs such as food, clean water and adequate health services. Also, Somalia's recurring droughts continually impact vulnerable children and women in adverse ways. According to an assessment by the Somali Relief Centre (SRC), women, a vast majority of whom are illiterate, if empowered, would be almost fully able to meet their basic needs, yet they have systematically and culturally been denied resources, information and the freedom of action needed to fulfil their responsibilities.
The Solution
SRC is working on a solution that has three components. Firstly, their project aims to improve literacy levels, provide life-saving healthcare practices as well as teach business and management skills to 600 vulnerable women. Secondly, it aims to provide small business development grants to these 600 women, with small business development counselling. Thirdly, the SRC Uistaag Dadka Iyo Dalka advocacy platform aims to advocate for the right of access to basic rights and needs (Health, WASH, etc).
Impact
SRC aims to reduce inequalities by providing economic resources to women. Through its platform that advocates for women’s rights to access basic needs, it supports women empowerment and gender equality.
